Air Mauritius and its travel partners raise R522 000 for the Reach for A Dream Foundation!

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 February 2020) – On 30 January 2020, Air Mauritius hosted its annual Travel Oscar Awards, to recognise its industry partners and acknowledge the great things that have been achieved as a result of these partnerships.

It also served as an opportunity for Air Mauritius and its partners to do great things for others – namely, for the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

Reach For A Dream Foundation’s mission is to encourage children to use their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses and inspire hope. Reach for a Dream believes in dreams they seek as far as possible to make dreams come true.

The foundation’s vision is to grow, which would enable the foundation to continue giving hope to children fighting life-threatening illnesses through the fulfilment of their dreams, and to further help as many children facing these illnesses though their national projects such as their Camp Sunshine, Queen For A Day, Captain Courage and their Jabulani Kingdom Hospital entertaining projects that all function on an ongoing basis. Each day we fulfil on average four dreams across South Africa.

For over 30 years the Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to South African children. These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, kidney failure and blood disorders.

Collectively, the travel industry raised an amazing R522 000 for the Foundation, during the Awards evening. This was especially fitting, given that the theme for the Awards was focused on dreams.

During the Travel Oscars, the Foundation invited guests to purchase dreams from the Tree Of Dreams – which was aptly decorated with twinkling fairy lights. The dreams ranged in value and size, from wishes for an iPad, to the ultimate fairy-tale dream of a trip to Disney World or to Mauritius to swim with the dolphins.

The Reach For A Dream Foundation confirms that 49 individual dreams will be fulfilled, thanks to the sponsorships and donations pledged by sponsors: Tourvest Travel Services, Flight Centre, Club Travel, Travelstart, XL Travel, One Stop Travel & Tours, Beachcomber Tours, BidAir, The Cullinan Group and The Holiday Factory.

“Air Mauritius is very proud to support the Reach For a Dream Foundation – South Africa’s premier NGO. We are thrilled that our Travel Oscar Awards presented us with an opportunity to further collaborate, and to make dreams come true. I am grateful to my industry partners and colleagues, for the pledges and donations they made – these are going to make such a powerful difference in the lives of the Foundation’s young beneficiaries. This just shows the incredible impact that collaboration can have – we raised over R500 000 in one evening! It’s another reason to love the travel industry,” said Carla da Silva, Air Mauritius Regional General Manager: Africa and Latin America.

With the collaboration of travel partners, the Foundation offered a prize to the company or individual who purchased the most dreams: A dreamy trip to Mauritius, complete with a stay at the 5-star Beachcomber Paradis Golf Resort and Spa, and Business Class flights sponsored by Air Mauritius and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA). Morne du Preez, MD of Tourvest Travel Services, was the winner, having purchased more than 20 dreams for the Foundation.

“We are privileged to be associated with a brand like Air Mauritius and to share a room with so many generous companies within the travel Industry.  The impact of the combined donation is going to make the world of difference to so many dream children and their families. We are looking forward to fulfilling these dreams knowing that the funds were donated by such special individuals who run these companies. I personally want to thank Carla da Silva from Air Mauritius for choosing Reach For A Dream as her charity of choice and always believing in the work that we do.  We are honoured to have Air Mauritius as a pillar of the Foundation,” said Julia Sotirianakos, CEO of the Reach For a Dream Foundation.
