There is an end to Aids (It’s US).
As part of its commitment to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa, Durex has partnered with (RED), a global non-profit organisation committed to ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic by partnering with iconic brands to raise money for the Global Fund.
Together we can raise awareness and vital funds to make a difference and empower young women and girls in their right to a happy and healthy life.
In South Africa, HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of premature mortalities. There are 7.1 million HIV positive people and 270 000 new infections every year. The objective of (Durex)RED is to drive awareness and secure pledges for practicing safe sex in order to prevent thousands of HIV infections.
“When you buy a (DUREX)RED condom, a percentage of the proceeds will go to The Keeping Girls in School Programme in South Africa.
A minimum donation of $5 million will be made to The Global Fund via the (DUREX)RED partnership. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will generously match meaning an incredible $10 million (minimum) to fight AIDS.
The grant aims to reduce new HIV infections and pregnancies among young women, improve access to sexual and reproductive health services and comprehensive sexuality education in schools, and encourage more girls to stay in education. 100% of the money generated goes to work on the ground.”
The partnership will include a global donation of $5 million to the Global Fund which includes proceeds from the sale of specially marked (DUREX)RED condom packs sold in South Africa. The condoms will be available at Clicks, Dischem, Pick ‘n Pay, Engen, Sasol and Total outlets from 1 October until 31 December 2018.
As part of the campaign launch in South Africa, a (DUREX)RED bus will embark on a roadshow touring eight communities in and around Gauteng, promoting condom use, providing sex education and distributing more than 150 000 free condoms.
“Gauteng is home to about a quarter of South Africa’s people, 17.6% of whom are living with HIV/AIDS1,” said Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, board member and Africa representative on the Durex Global Advisory for Sexual Health and Wellbeing. “The (DUREX)RED Gauteng roadshow will empower residents with the information they need to make more informed decisions about their sexuality.”
The (DUREX)RED bus hits the streets in October, visiting Braamfontein, Elandsfontein, Mamelodi, Cosmo City, Thembisa, Sebokeng, Thokoza, Soweto, Alexandra, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa. At all activation points, residents will be encouraged to participate in and support the fight against HIV/AIDS by signing the (DUREX)RED pledge wall.
“It is important to practise safe sex, which can prevent sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and HIV. Taking the pledge to practise safe sex means we are creating a community of people committed to taking control of their own sexual health and the health of their partners. Residents are encouraged to take the pledge as a means of driving communities closer to achieving the goals of an HIV/AIDS-free generation. Come and take the pledge at the activation station or visit the Durex website and take the pledge online.”
For those not able to make it to the events, you can pledge to protect yourself by dialling *120*654321# for free on your mobile phone or visit www.durex.co.za/red to take the pledge online.
Funds raised by (DUREX)RED will go to The Keeping Girls in School Programme in South Africa. The programme aims to reduce new HIV infections and pregnancies among young women, improve access to sexual and reproductive health services, comprehensive sex education in schools, and encourage more girls to stay in education.
