For decades, NPO workers have played a crucial role in South Africa, and we will need them even more than ever as the health and societal challenges of the coronavirus start to increase.

Johannesburg, South Africa (2 April 2020) – Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa (CAFSA) has launched an emergency fund to support local Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) during this challenging period.

With the economic and health challenges emerging from the COVID-19 crisis, thousands of NPOs are set to be impacted by funding shortages, which will result in a reduction or discontinuation of services and dedicated staff losing their jobs.

“For decades, NPO workers have played a crucial role in South Africa, and we will need them even more than ever as the health and societal challenges of the coronavirus start to increase. To keep these critical services going, CAFSA is mobilising support to make funding available to help NPOs who render essential services to the most marginalised individuals, groups and communities in our society.”

CAFSA are calling on both individuals and corporates to donate. Details for donations are on our website: www.cafsouthernafrica.org.

CAFSA will process all donations and ensure that due diligence, governance compliance and reporting are fully implemented. CAFSA will further ensure that all donations are designated to validated beneficiary organisations. Donors will also be issued with Section 18(a) certificates for income tax purposes.

CAFSA’s background

CAFSA is an independent non-profit organisation that promotes and facilitates effective giving, volunteering and social investment. It has been present in South Africa since 1997, and in 2000 it became a registered Section 21 not-for-profit and public benefit organisation.

While being a wholly South African organisation, CAFSA is also a Strategic Partner of the CAF Global Alliance, an international network of locally-led organisations working to grow giving and strengthen civil society.  The CAF Global Alliance was founded by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), headquartered in the United Kingdom. This means that while CAFSA is an independent body, it has access to CAF’s skilled professionals, intellectual capital and value model.

CAFSA has over 500 validated NGOs nationwide on its database and several large, high-profile corporate partners and donors.

“We call all on individuals and corporates to join us in donating to this important initiative. In the spirit of Ubuntu and during these unprecedented times, we can stand together to flatten the curve and support those most in need.”

  1. its painful to see orphans and vulnerable children suffering in small communities because most of support goes to big Cities and no mention of such areas by either the president or his cabinet, most of the NPO’s in North West province are asking themselves what they can offer to community because they also need support. I just wish our NPO’s can be treated equally in the same scale as NPO’s in big cities and the minister of Social Development can also consider us when she give out support. It’s really painful to visit houses and see those little faces hungry and no hope for meal to give them. Please Mr President and your team include us in your plan because last year during Aids Day our organization had a visit from the government that made empty promises, we had hope that will help these children but to date nothing
