The Knysna Fire Relief Effort has been set up in light of the recent storms that have hit the Garden Route and sent fires blazing through Knysna and surrounding areas.
The Knysna community have taken it upon themselves to help each other. Initaited by Scott McKenna and Sean McLintock, the fund aims to raise as much money as possible to assist all Knysna fire victims.
“Having all lived in Knysna most of our lives, we thought it important to initiate the fund raising process for those who cannot afford to rebuild and recover after this disaster.”
The brothers have set up a website for information, as well as local and international crowd-funding sites.
827 houses in the informal settlement have been destroyed including hundreds of other formal homes in the area. Support is being organized for over 15 000 people in the local Knysna area.
They are calling on all South Africans to help the people of Knysna. Donations will be used to start the rebuilding process and give those most badly affected a chance to get back on their feet!
“In order to help the many people who have lost their homes and possessions, been displaced, or injured by the devistating fires, we call on your help!”
“We have already raised over R 125 000 and can’t thank everyone enough! Lets keep going and keep helping!”
100% of proceeds will go towards those affected.
All the donations are transparent and they will be constantly updating the website to show how and for what the donations are being used for.
Money will go to items like blankets, food parcels, clothes, matresses, building equipment and assistance, and whatever else is most needed. This includes tampons, pads, toiletries, towls, shampoo, eye drops, and other basic necessities.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Knysna have partnered with the relief fund. They will help ensure that assistance is distributed to those who need it most.
“Hopefully – with your help – we can also assist the eventual reconstruction of houses for those who cannot afford such a devistating loss. This will include funding for corregated roofing and other necessary materials.”
They have partnered with the Rotary Club in Knysna to assist once the fire has been extinguished. They aim to form a volunteer team to engage communities and understand who is most badly affected and what additional help they can offer.
“Any amount makes a difference to those in need and we cannot thank you enough for supporting Knysna and its people! Please check the above site for updates regarding the use of the donations.”
