Hundreds of thousands of people became employed in Q2, lowering SA’s unemployment rates! Better yet, that’s not the only good news for our employments stats:
South Africa (16 August, 2023) — South Africa’s unemployment rates have taken a turn for the better; with over 100 000 people becoming employed in Q2. This comes after Q1’s unemployment rates left numerous South Africans feeling despondent; showing naysayers that while the employment rates are nowhere near where they should be, a turnaround has come about for the best.
According to Statistics South Africa which released its latest quarterly report yesterday, the number of employed persons increased by 154 000 to 16,3 million in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2023.
In addition, the number of unemployed people went down by 11 000, while discouraged work-seekers decreased by 94 000 compared to Q1; which Statistics SA highlighted as a net decrease of 1 000 in “the not economically active population”.
In even more good news, unemployed youth rates saw 105 000 young people get jobs, the formal sector employment increased by 143 000 and community and social services saw a massive employment gain with 63 000 people.
Overall, South Africa’s unemployment rate has dropped from 32,9% in Q1 to 32,6% in Q2.
Small victories are still victories!
