As Apple launches the iPhone X, the big question for many consumers is how they can afford to get their hands on the latest in cellphone technology.
The brand new iPhone X… that’s pronounced “ten,” by the way, not “ex”… is a phone of firsts for Apple. The 5.8-inch OLED screen isn’t just larger, it also uses a different technology that Apple says will make colors absolutely pop. It’s also the first iPhone to completely do away with the iconic home button, and it’s the first to offer Face ID as a new way to securely unlock the phone and pay in the check-out line.
The iPhone X is Apple’s only new device to nab optical image stabilization for both rear 12-megapixel camera lenses, a portrait mode on the front-facing camera (despite having just one lens and not two), and “more breezily” a new feature to animate emojis.
The iPhone X goes on sale starting at $999 (R13 000) on October 27, and it ships November 3.
Head of Core Business at Gumtree South Africa, Claire Cobbledick, says not enough South Africans appreciate how much value there is in their old phones.
“The average second-hand smartphone on Gumtree sells for R4,500 which represents a significant subsidy for the purchase of a new iPhone.”
According to Cobbledick most people tend to upgrade their phone and keep their old one gathering dust in the drawer without realizing that it’s a quick and easy way to make a few thousand Rands back.
“No matter how old your iPhone is, there’s someone out there who wants to buy it.”
Over 1 million South Africans visit Gumtree’s electronics section every month searching mainly for smartphones and laptops.
Cobbledick says the re-sale price of the individual phone will depend on how well it has been looked after, but she offers a guide to average prices achieved for each of the most recent iPhone models.
