The MMC for Public Safety in Johannesburg has taken it upon himself to make sure JMPD officers abide to disabled parking etiquette and all other road rules.
It has barely been 2 months since the new mayoral committee has taken over office in Johannesburg but already, the positive changes happening in Johannesburg giving citizens hope for the future of our world class city.
The most recent act comes from the MMC for Public Safety Clr. Michael Sun, who was alerted by the public that Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers had been parking in either handicapped or emergency bays whilst apparently on private business.
This is certainly not a new trend and many of these incidents have been shared on social media and even South African news sites.
Earlier this year The Citizen reported that a man in Roodepoort, on the West Rand, had accused a JMPD officer of assaulting and racially abusing him after the community member approached the officer, who had parked a van in a disabled parking area at the Roodepoort Licensing Department.
In another incident, IOL reported that two Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD) officers apparently laughed at a wheelchair student who confronted them for parking in a disabled parking space.
When MMC Sun was alerted to some of the more recent incidences, he immidiately acted on them and instructed for disciplinary invesigations to be conducted.
Two separate cases have been opened at JMPD Internal Affairs Unit under case numbers CCR. No.27/10/2016 and CCR No. 26/10/2016, and the officers involved will be given fair hearings to present their versions.
Speaking to GoodThingsGuy, MMC Sun wants to encourage residents to capture any untoward conduct by the JMPD and alert him to it immediately.
MMC Sun says “There are many good and hard working officers in JMPD. We welcome residents’ help to shape JMPD into one of the best in the world and more importantantly the one that is respected by the community”.
The local police also frequent gambling at Ricky Sin, cnr Hunter and Bram Fischer ave in Ferndale. Loads of police cars are seen in and out all day. Also with disregard to where they park.
