Molly Malone’s have officially launched their Roadhouse Drive-In today, bringing that old school sense of nostalgia and novelty to 2020.

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 June 2020) – Molly Malone’s in Fourways have just announced that the restaurant has turned into an old school Roadhouse Drive-In, until they are allowed to open properly again.

A place to relax and let loose with friends, Molly Malone’s has been a staple in the area for over 12 years, and the restaurant/pub has become well known for their pub-style food, quiz nights, live bands and sporting viewings.

Speaking to Good Things Guy, the restaurant says this will all still be on offer, but just in an old school Roadhouse Drive-In style.

The roadhouse is a popular American tradition that spread to South Africa around the 1940s. The concept was made popular also in pop culture in stories like “On The Road” and “Easy Rider”. Traditionally the purpose of the roadhouse was to provide food and lodging for travellers, and they’d usually be situated on the main road. As things got more developed, roadhouses started serving food to people right in their car, offering a quick stopover for human fuel.

Many businesses have had to rethink how they will move forward with the South African lockdown regulations, especially restaurants – who were forced to close for most of the lockdown and only started serving food a couple of weeks ago.

The level 3 regulations state that the consumption of food and alcohol in restaurants, bars, shebeens and taverns is still prohibited, but South Africans are allowed to collect food… so a Roadhouse Drive-In makes perfect sense.

**13 June 2020 Update: The police shut the “roadhouse” down last night after just 2 days of being open – the SAPS said that they did not have permission and what they were doing is considered illegal (a social gathering). Molly Malone’s is trying to re-open it, but it doesn’t look very likely at this point. We will keep you updated.

**15 June 2020 Update: Update to the “Molly Malone’s Road House” ordeal – they will be opening again today at 4 pm under the legal advice they have received. Apparently, they have strict conditions they need to adhere too, but they are open again!
