Lorraine lost her job due to the pandemic so she launched a peanut butter business to make ends meet and her community is loving it!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 November 2020) – Lorraine had a promising 2020 lined up when the clock struck midnight. She wanted to start her studies and had big things planned but then like everyone else, that fell away due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 29-year-old mother also lost her job as the hospitality industry collapsed. Lorraine was driven to make ends meet and came up with a small business idea that would hopefully change everything.

“I enrolled with Unisa to do a BA in Health and Social Science majoring in Psychology so I could pursue my dream of studying further, but that was before Covid hit and just like so many others, this lockdown completely knocked me off my feet. I sadly had to put my plans on hold. I also was in the hospitality industry before the lockdown and unfortunately lost my job.”

Lorraine started making homemade peanut butter and selling it to her local community in Blouberg and surrounds. The community quickly became obsessed with the delicious treat, which was safe for vegans and pets alike.

Lorraine named the business after her three-year-old sone Lemuel, calling it “Lemu’s Treats“.

“The “Lemu” as part of Lemu’s Treats is my nickname for my son, Lemuel who’s name is derived from the bible. Lemuel is a Hebrew name meaning devoted to God. I decided to name my business Lemu’s treats because my son has always been a guiding light and a source of strength in my life. I want my son to grow up and have a starting point in life and I dream of a legacy that I can leave for him especially since he loves peanut butter so much.”

Samantha Nolan fell in love with Lemu’s Treats peanut butter. After a few weeks, they developed a relationship, and Lorraine explained to Samantha that she had a trailer that was just R6000.00 short of being paid off.

Samantha knew this amount would mean all the difference to Lorraine’s business, so she launched a crowdfund to help make the final payment.

“It’s [the trailer] not quite hers yet as she still owes R6000 on it. She ordered the trailer in December last year and started paying it off. The trailer’s value is R38 000. Initially, Lorraine’s plan was to use the trailer for a mobile beauty salon. However, having found a niche in the market with their peanut butter I thought it to be very sad that she stands to lose the trailer. This is the very item that could take her from market to market to sell this amazing product and hopefully other add on products in the future that would utilise their peanut butter.”

The use of the trailer will mean that Lorraine will be able to grow her business and make a real difference to her son’s life. If you would like to support the crowdfund, you can do so here.
