Blue Ribbon launched a “drop & swap” initiative during September 2020 to give back and make a difference in communities while recycling – It was a massive success for all involved!
South Africa (20 January 2021) – Blue Ribbon launched its ‘Drop & Swap’ initiative on the 28th of September 2020 as a way to lend a helping hand to their loyal consumers. The Blue Ribbon bread bags were turned into currency which could be swapped for items that would make life a little easier during these hard times.
The initiative was well-received and highly praised by many of our readers, and it was a massive success within the communities where the swaps took place.
The Blue Ribbon ‘Drop & Swap’ initiative took place in thirteen communities: Khayelitsha, Blue Downs, Mitchells Plain, Soweto, Daveyton, Mohlakeng, and Tembisa, Sasolburg, Sebokeng, Orange Farm, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and Soshanguve.
The community and customers were encouraged to bring their empty Blue Ribbon bread bags to the drop and swap activations and swap them for givebacks and rewards. Their empty bags served as a “currency” and could be swapped for more bread, airtime and grocery vouchers.
Not only did this initiative reduce plastic in the environment and help people in need of a little extra, but over and above this, the four community initiatives that brought in the most Blue Ribbon bread bags won R50 000 cash incentive towards their community upliftment project within Gauteng and Western Cape.
In total, 13 187 Blue Ribbon bread bags were handed in at the 42 activations points within the 13 communities. In return, customers were able to use the bread bag “currency” to receive a total of 4656 loaves of bread and 2076 airtime and shopping vouchers.

- Sebokeng – 926 bread bags collected – Sebokeng Educational Institute for Sports Development.
- Mitchells Plain – 2111 bread bags collected- Jorvan Community Outreach Project
- Soweto – 926 bread bags collected- Sophie’s Foundation
- Atteridgeville – 1019 bread bags collected – Rearabilwe Community Development Centre
Everyone at the hand-over ceremony was over the moon with the R50,000 cash incentive. It certainly is a valuable contribution in assisting to make positive changes within their communities.
