The donation marks the first batch of 50 000 facemasks the company is providing to municipal employees and councillors, most of whom are on the frontline of combating the contagious pandemic.
Johannesburg, South Africa (21 May 2020) – Clothing and lifestyle brand Polo South Africa has donated 25 000 facemasks to the City of Joburg, which are set to boost the fight against the transmission of the novel coronavirus in the workplace.
The donation marks the first batch of 50 000 facemasks the company is providing to municipal employees and councillors, most of whom are on the frontline of combating the contagious pandemic.
MMC for Health and Social Development Eunice Mgcina accepted the donation on behalf of the Executive Mayor, Geoffrey Makhubo on Thursday, 14 May at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein.
Mark Oliver, Polo SA Managing Director said the company was motivated to contribute 25 000 facemasks to metropolitan cities in the country, as part of efforts to support the South African government’s attempts to combat the spread of the infectious Covid-19 pandemic.
“This is our small way of supporting the call from our President for all of us to come together as a nation to fight this unprecedented crisis. It is our way of caring for our communities in this time of extreme crisis,” said Oliver.
MMC Mgcina said the face masks would go a long way in boosting stocks of much-needed protective equipment for the City’s health workers.
She added that the donation from Polo SA was a true demonstration of beneficial public and private partnerships and that government could not carry out the fight against the spread of the pandemic alone.
“When the Executive Mayor made a call to business partners around the City that we needed their assistance in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, they responded positively. We are grateful that this positive response continues – as demonstrated by Polo SA. We will make sure that this donation reaches all our staff members in all our departments – some of whom are on the frontline in the fight against this disease,” she explained.
MMC Mgcina hoped the donation marked the beginning of a long-lasting partnership with the company and that officials would respond positively to the need to wear facemasks at all times.
“Our councillors will also benefit as there is now an expectation that they must go all out.”
