Craft Gins

South African Craft Gins are all the rage at ‘Sundowners’ these days so it is no surprise that we hear so many good news stories relating to the dry spirit. Recently two companies made headlines for the best reasons.

If you are of age and inclined to enjoy the occasional cheeky G&T then this is the story for you! Headlines recently raved about two South African Craft Gins that are wowing people everywhere.

One Cape Town-based distillery has managed to perfect a ‘Drought Gin’ by minimising their use of water while another local gin picked up an award at the World Gin Awards. These two exciting announcements popped up on the same day so it is safe to say that SA has a booming Gin industry.

Drought Gin by Pienaar & Son Distillery.

The Pienaar and Son distillery is located smack-bang in the middle of the Cape Town city bowl. The distillery has been actively working to adapt to the water crisis in the Western Cape. They have saved water in almost every aspect but wanted to do more.

The process of diluting gin can use up to 200 litres of water per batch. To combat this, the distillery has decided to skip the water and provide a stronger gin. They urge the people drinking the gin to drink responsibily.

“Gin comes off the still at 80% alc.
Usually diluting this gin to 43% require about 200L of water per batch.
We decided to skip this step.
It saves water and gets us all thinking about water and how to save more of it in our every day lives.”

The Drought Edition is best served as a single, which would give the same affect as pouring a double of a regular alcohol percentage.

Winner of Best South African ‘London Dry Gin’ – World Gin Awards

The winners of the World Gin Awards have been announced and a South African company made the cut. KWV Cruxland Gin won the Best South African Gin in the ‘London Dry Gin’ category.

The gin is the first in the world to be infused with Truffle.

Pieter de Bod, the Brandy Master at KWV shared the exciting news on Twitter.
