Elizabeth Harriesunker started her mobile barber service to give back to the community; today, she and her team provide free trims to people who need them most.
South Africa (25 September 2023) – Elizabeth Harriesunker and her team use their hair-cutting and barber skills in the best way, offering free haircuts to people in orphanages, disability homes, old age homes, skill centres, and schools. Community is at the heart of the Mobile Barber Co., and thanks to a new partnership, the team reach even more people in need.
The Mobile Barber Co. operated out of a fully equipped minibus which travelled to underprivileged communities, giving everyone a boost of confidence. Elizabeth started this fantastic project in 2019 but faced a few financial roadblocks that nearly had her parking the minibus for good!
Thankfully, McDonald’s heard of her initiative and reached out to partner with the project to make sure it went further than ever.
Thanks to the “Together Mzansi” initiative run by McDonald’s, a second minibus was kitted out and converted into a mobile barber, and services for the community continued. Now the McDonald’s “Mobile Barber” is on the cutting edge of feel-good services for underserved communities.
The project brings everyone involved immense joy, especially when seeing the happiness on their clients’ faces. Who doesn’t love the feeling of having their hair done? For many, this is a luxury that is now looked forward to on a regular basis. It provides a means of restoring dignity and a way for people in the chair to connect with their barber or hairdresser – to feel heard.
The mobile barber team are changing lives, and we are loving it!
