South African Breweries (SAB) have offered 9 million litres of bottled water to Cape Town to assist with drought and Day Zero.

SAB general manager John Stenslund confirmed that 9 million litres of water – bottled in 12 million quarts – would be distributed to assist with the severe drought.

“We have offered to potentially provide a million cases of bottled water to the citizens of Cape Town.”

Production on this project has not yet begun, he explains but will kick in during march so as to be ready for day Zero.

The plans have become clearer over the last 72-hours.

Stensland explains that SAB would produce water on a weekly basis, to provide a million cases of water – which is 12 million quart bottles, or 9 million litres in total, over a period of March to July.

He says they are planning distribution to reach all areas in need.

Earlier on Monday, Helen Zille attended a meeting at the provincial disaster management headquarters to discuss preparation for, and management of, Day Zero and its aftermath.

“People must not now think SAB will save us from Day Zero. The only thing that will save us is if everyone cuts their water consumption for all purposes to 50 litres per person per day,” she said.

“What their generous offer will help us with, for example, is getting water to institutions – such as old age homes – that desperately need it when the taps go off.”

  1. Screw SAB!

    Now owned by Anheuser-Busch.
“Belgian-Brazilian brewery Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev ) was formed through the merge of the two companies, Anheuser-Busch and InBev, in 2008, making it the world’s largest brewer and one of the biggest consumer products companies worldwide.

    200,000 employees, and revenue of $45Billion (R500billion).”

And they want our spring water for free? Screw their plastic bottles. I think we need to charge them for our spring water…
