As the 2017 cohort of South African matriculants live out their final school days and consider their options as the newest wave of young adults, they are being challenged by a popular social media campaign to show the country that they have the power to create change.

SACAP

SACAP (The South African College of Applied Psychology), in partnership with our very own Brent Lindeque has launched the vlogging campaign, ‘You have the power to create change’ to emphasise to young South Africans that they have great value to offer the country.

Brent and a group of young South Africans are embarking on a road trip to create change, popping in at a variety of charity and school programmes to lend a hand. They are visiting Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, creating change in big and small ways, challenging other young South Africans to actively get involved in their communities.

CEO of SACAP, Lance Katz, says: “As a proudly South African private further education institution with high appeal to the young people who want to invest their talents and skills in a better South Africa for all, we believe that this campaign will ignite the interest of those who feel the urge to step up and go forward into the world of work as a bona fide change-maker.”

Each roadtrip takes Brent and the change-makers to three different community initiatives.

The roadtrip journey kicked off in Cape Town recently, where Brent together with Camps Bay High matriculant and future SACAP student, Charlotte Stoltzman made sandwiches to donate to the Haven Night Shelter, visited the Underdog Project to find out how they are changing the lives of dogs and at risk teenagers and learned to skate with the youngster that are part of the Eyetu Skateboarding initiative in Hout Bay.

The Haven Night Shelter makes a daily impact on the lives of the homeless in the Western Cape. Their operations are effective and the public can easily assist too.

By donating just R12 to the shelter, you can assist someone in getting a place of safety to sleep with a warm shower and a hot meal.

The Eyethu Skateboarding initiative was created to serve nearly 9000 underprivileged kids in the Hout Bay area. The programme was created as a place where the community can be exposed to positive role models; it is a space where the differences in racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds simply don’t matter!

The main focus of the Underdog Project is to assist at-risk teenagers with overcoming social and emotional problems, and learning valuable life skills, through the training of shelter and rescue dogs; in turn teaching these dogs the skills to improve their chances of adoption.

Join us on our first “YOU have the power to create change” roadtrip.

Next month we will be spending the day in Jozi….. expect some drumming with the elderly, surprise birthday cupcakes and boxing!

And if you are a matriculant who believes they have the power to create change and is interested in the field of psychology and counselling, SACAP offers a wide range of qualifications including (Higher Certificate, Diploma, BAppSocSci, Bpsych, BPsych Equivalent and BsocSci Honours) and a one-of-a-kind approach to learning: academic rigour and applied skills. Graduating confident “work ready” practitioners is key, which is why SACAP combines an academically rigorous curriculum with a strong emphasis on the ability to apply knowledge through the training of relevant skills.

Registration for 2018 term one, closes at the end of January 2018. For further information, visit: www.sacap.edu.za

  1. The “YOU have the power to create change” road trip is a wonderful initiative and I wish you all the success with it.

As Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

As part of your programme please include a section dedicated to litter awareness and recycling initiatives.

Our country, both land and sea, is being buried in garbage and although there are a lot of programmes to promote awareness of this scourge, the information is not available to most of our population.

Most schools do not seem to offer “non-littering” and recycling education in their curriculum.

Sadly, where I live, in a small village in the Karoo, the worse culprits of dumping and littering are school teachers.

You have a great opportunity here to spread awareness of this dreadful practice.
