Two armed hijackers were caught by SANRAL cameras which lead to them being apprehended by the Johannesburg Metro Police!
Johannesburg, South Africa – This is a fantastic case-study that technology can be used to fight crime in South Africa and a realisation that more cameras on our roads will create a significant deterrent to criminal activity in the future.
Two armed hijackers were caught by SANRAL cameras which lead to them being apprehended by the Johannesburg Metro Police!
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is a South African parastatal responsible for the management, maintenance and development of South Africa’s proclaimed National Road network which includes many (but not all) National (“N”) and some Provincial (“R”) route segments.
SANRAL, together with the local authorities recently implemented an Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) project for South African roads, whereby digital technology is used to manage traffic, provide road users with traffic conditions on a real-time basis, and keep road users safe!
The new footage from some of their highway cameras was uploaded to their social media yesterday (9 July 2019) and showed how the cameras were used to track hijackers until the authorities could stop them to make an arrest.
