There is a new initiative bringing animal shelters together in South Africa. This is all you need to know about The Rescue Collective.
Johannesburg, South Africa (18 September 2022) – The Rescue Collective – because charities working with each other are stronger together!
The Rescue Collective was started by three people who have spent most of their lives involved in animal welfare – Dean Bush, founder of Greyhound Welfare SA, Jennifer Gerner, former vet nurse for Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) and Cheryl Hunter, who has been involved across all aspects of animal welfare for more than 30 years. They have found that NPOs frequently operate in silos and are so busy, operating on shoestring budgets, that they seldom have the opportunity to network among themselves and find areas of collaboration.
The trio also believes that consumers are largely unaware of the numerous NPOS doing great work under exceptionally difficult circumstances and rarely have the opportunity to engage with these organisations and understand what it is they do.

The new initiative is bringing together all of the animal rescue and rehabilitation groups for a massive outdoor event at Pirates Sports Club in Greenside on Saturday, October 8th, from 9 am to 3 pm.
“This date was chosen to align with World Animal Day – an international day of action for animal rights and welfare to raise the status of animals and improve welfare standards – celebrated annually on October 4th (the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals).”
The rescue expo aims to be an annual event bringing together as many of the NPOs as possible to shed light on all animal welfare, not just dogs and cats, and to educate the general public on their great work in the community – from donkeys and garden birds to pet rats and parrots. And for consumers to meet the incredibly dedicated people who have given their lives to improve the welfare of the animals among us.
“This is the first event but we have had incredible interest from all over South Africa and are hoping to expand outside of Gauteng going forward.”
