Viva Independent School - SA choir heads to Europe to showcase their incredible talent!

A small choir from Mamelodi East are travelling to Germany and Holland to showcase their incredible talent!

Tshwane, South Africa – A group of 12 children and 4 teachers, from the Viva Village Independent School, Alaska Informal Settlement in Mamelodi East, are embarking on an experience of a lifetime this Wednesday 4 December 2019.

The Viva Children’s Choir are set to tour Germany and Holland for 13 performances in 18 days.

The choir will be travelling from Hamburg in the North of Germany down to Konstanz in the South and across to Winterswijk and Amsterdam in Holland. They will be performing in churches, at Christmas markets, sports events and a corporate Christmas function along the way. The talented group of young singers from the Alaska Informal Settlement will be accompanied by soloists Meleney Kriel and Sinethemba Hlungwane, and are under the direction of Choir Conductor Taki Malepane.

Says founder of Viva Foundation and accompanying soloist, Meleney Kriel, “This excursion marks the first time many of the children and accompanying teachers have travelled outside of Tshwane and will afford them a most wonderful and life-changing opportunity. The primary objectives of the tour are to offer the children an experience of a lifetime and to show them an alternative perspective to the extreme poverty they face daily and to conduct much-needed awareness and fundraising.”

Taki Malepane, the conductor and music teacher of the school, remarked at one of the monthly Choir Camps that took place since August this year, how the children are free to be themselves, and they can relax when they are outside the informal settlement. The experience will impact them for life.

Nokubonga Mabuza [11 years old], head girl of the school and member of the choir, expressed her excitement this way: “We are like the Ndlovu Youth Choir because they went to America and we are going to Germany.”

The costs of the tour have been covered primarily through the generosity of members of the public and via the Viva Foundation Facebook page.
