A new advert is bringing hope for South African dog owners – Canine Cuisine offers a solution after hearing that a popular brand has discontinued its dry dog food range.
Johannesburg, South Africa (04 May 2023) – South African premium dog food brand Canine Cuisine is of the belief that a popular dog food brand has discontinued their dry dog food range and launched a cute advert to offer your pup an alternative.
They aren’t saying what brand has been discontinued… or are they?
In the pet food market, competitive advertising is extensively regulated, so competitors can’t directly communicate to South Africans about other brands. However, Canine Cuisine says that this isn’t just a superficial advertising debate; this is a pet wellness issue.
Leading veterinarian, Dr Carra Walters of Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital, says, “Unlike human diets, where we are able to immediately substitute one food source for another, pets require a gradual transition from one type of food to another. Changing your pet’s diet too quickly can cause gastrointestinal upset, with symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea. This is because the new food may have different ingredients, nutrient levels, or fibre content than what your pet is used to, which can be difficult for their digestive systems and gut microbiomes to adjust to.”
In addition to the online video that encourages dog owners – in need of a new, premium, local dry dog food brand – to switch to an alternative, Canine Cuisine has produced the below infographic to aid consumers in safely transitioning their dogs over to their new food, now that their current branded dry dog food may soon be unavailable.

Dr Walters says that it takes at least a seven-day process for your dog to safely transition to a new diet.
“That’s why I recommend starting this switch as soon as possible before you complete the remaining quantities of your existing dog food. If you have any concerns, contact your local vet.”
A statement released by Mars Consumer Products Africa (Pty) Ltd. in November 2022 confirmed that the discontinuation of several popular dry dog foods would be effective from the 1st of January 2023.
