For a whole week, green warriors braved rain and early mornings to tackle heaps and heaps of trash along the Umngeni River as part of The Litterboom Project’s continued efforts to protect our ocean!
Umngeni, South Africa (08 January 2025) – We only have one ocean (so to speak), and it plays a huge part in our environment, marine ecosystems, climate and well-being. Our very lives depend on protecting it.
More than just a thought-provoking statement, this call to action resonates deeply with South Africa’s biggest river waste interception mission, the Litterboom Project, which ended 2024 with a bang during its Big Umgeni Cleanup.
The seven-day initiative saw crowds of green soldiers roll up their sleeves and lace up their boots to tackle one of the organisation’s biggest cleanup campaigns aimed at collecting plastic and other harmful waste found near and within the Umngeni River.
Early mornings, rainy conditions, tireless searches for litter and one bag filled after another, the end of the week-long anti-litter campaign resulted in a staggering 1,385 bags of waste and three 1-ton bags from the area!
This commendable effort played a key role in protecting the Beachwood Mangroves and intercepting plastic waste before it reaches the ocean.
The Litterboom Project’s CEO, Cameron Service, expressed his pride in the organisation’s successes in all its regions and the growth in the number of like-minded friends who have joined their invaluable mission to protect our oceans, rivers and communities throughout the previous year.
“We feel encouraged by the working relationship with the City of Cape Town and more recently, having connected with stakeholders in eThekwini Municipality.
“We remain optimistic that we can get to a point where we can tackle the plastic waste issue together and form long-term strategies that mitigate rather than deal with end-of-the-line symptoms,” an optimistic Cameron concludes.
