In a continued effort to support Cape Town’s under-greened communities, Greenpop’s Gardens for Good keeps touching lives!
Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2024) – Since its inception, the Gardens for Good initiative has planted over 3,700 plants and 220 trees thanks to the help of 1765 people. Eight schools and community spaces in the Western Cape have been the beneficiaries of new gardens, creating green spaces where they are needed most.
Many marginalised communities are lacking in green spaces which is what inspired the Greenpop initiative. Schools and communities are being turned into beautiful indigenous green spaces which is changing the urban landscape.
“This project is geared towards reinvigorating Cape Town’s urban landscapes with verdant, biodiverse sanctuaries. By integrating indigenous plant species into the urban fabric, Gardens for Good aims to fortify the city’s green infrastructure, promoting ecosystem services and enhancing the well-being of its communities.
Working at under-resourced schools and other community spaces, the initiative has not only transformed physical spaces but has also sown seeds of environmental consciousness among the youth.”
Having green spaces helps to regulate temperatures, improve air quality, enhance water and soil quality, reduce noise pollution, provide habitats for urban wildlife, help to combat climate change and improve mental and physical health.
“You won’t believe how much impact a lesson like this has on the children- they go home and brag about it, and at the end of the year when you ask them about it they can remember the day vividly.” – Ezra Peters (Teacher, Strandfontein Primary School
Greenpop has shared a report which highlights all the work being done at eight Western Cape schools and communities. You can read the full report here.
