A giant four-metre snake was found in supermarket fridge in Mpumalanga on Friday.

It is reported that a merchandiser was left gobsmacked at the Koomartiport Spar when he saw the huge snake while he was busy working. He immediately notified the manageress who saw the African rock python curled up seemingly asleep amongst the yoghurts and milk cartons and called for staff to help.

The snake was close to four metres in length, Spar manager Martie Esnouf told News24.

“It got stuck in the fridge. It could have come through the roof or the drains, we have a lot of bush behind the shops, and there are snakes there.”

She said the snake was freed from the fridge and was now under observation and would be released into the nearby Kruger National Park.

“When a snake ends up in the fridge, its organs start shutting down and it could take up to 48 hours for it to be back to normal,” she said.

A local snake catcher was called to tackle the African Rock Python. He pulled out all the yoghurts and dairy items from the freezer until he could see the python’s full length and a colleague brought a sack to put it in.

The snake will be monitored to make sure that it did not sustain any injuries while in the fridge and then be placed back in the wild… far away from the supermarket.
