No wall was too high, and no obstacle too tricky for The Animal Guardians, who relentlessly went after a man who attempted to sell a Leopard Tortoise in Putfontein.
Benoni, South Africa (08 January 2026) – A team of animal guardians lived up to their title yesterday afternoon, engaging in a high-stakes chase through the Putfontein/Chief Albert Luthuli area to save a little Leopard Tortoise who would have likely ended up on the black market.
The Animal Guardians (TAG) team were relentless in their pursuit of a man attempting to sell the tortoise. According to the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (SAWRC), who were contacted by TAG for support, the scene played out like a blockbuster action chase as Annalize took the wheel and Katie tracked every move with razor focus.
TAG’s other exceptional staff, TK, Simo, Samo, and Kwena, immediately took off on foot when the suspect realised they were onto him. What followed was a chaotic chase to corner the man and rescue the tortoise.
“The man behaved erratically and aggressively, even attempting to assault the women who refused to fall back. At one point, as Annalize neared him, he used the tortoise to try and smash her window.
“TK, Simo, Samo and Kwena matched this lunatic, wall jump for wall jump, and eventually managed to catch up to him,” SAWRC reports.
After putting up a fight that he was never going to win, the man surrendered.
While the team’s immediate focus was on securing and protecting the tortoise, the man managed to slip away and escape. However, TAG had secured what mattered most.
SAWRC confirms that the little creature, who’d suffered quite the ordeal and a few smashes to the ground, was scheduled to see Dr Shabeer at Terrace Road Veterinary Hospital first thing this morning for a full report to be done on her condition.
The TAG team has since located the suspect’s residence and will be pursuing the matter further to ensure he faces the full might of the law.
This is the kind of work that often goes unseen. A huge thank you goes out to every person who courageously faced the unpredictable and stepped in to change the fate of a creature that couldn’t protect itself.
As SAWRC noted:
“Even though the TAG team is as tough as nails, the extra help was welcome. They are beyond remarkable, and it is a complete honour to know them.”
