To honour the compassion and extraordinary efforts of its kennel carers who have taken on more surrendered and stray animals than they ever have this year alone, the Animal Welfare Helderberg hopes to bless these unsung heroes just in time for the festive season.
Gordon’s Bay, South Africa (14 October 2025) – Behind almost every animal shelter are dedicated kennel carers, working quietly in the background as they tend to the many abandoned, injured and surrendered animals that enter the doors.
They are the men and women who aren’t often seen in rescue missions or known by those inquiring about a new furry companion. Yet still, they’re always there – behind every admission, taking over the reins after a chaotic rescue, pouring their hearts into each creature, nurturing them until they are ready to embark on their journey to a forever home.
As the year nears its end and the anticipation of the holiday season lingers, the Animal Welfare Helderberg is rallying support to bless a few of their own with grocery boxes filled with non-perishables, toiletries and some treats.
In what the team describes as a severely pressurised, highly emotional, draining and hectic year, with the kennel facility having experienced more surrendered and stray animals than ever before, the welfare hopes to give back to the unsung heroes who formed a vital part of ensuring things keep running and no animal is ever overlooked.
“These guys and girls are so committed to caring for our animals.
“The amount of extremely neglected, abused, sad and lost souls that have walked through our doors has been hectic, and our kennel carers have helped to nurse them back to health and helped them to trust people again. These kennel carers are busy all day long, making sure our dog and cat camps are clean, they have warm, clean beds, clean water bowls every day and a yummy bowl of food,” Animal Welfare Helderberg shared.
The organisation has 10 men and four women working at its kennel facility and is appealing to the public to help in putting together a grocery-filled box for each of them by early December.
“We are humbly asking for donations towards these boxes. We will be so grateful for non-perishable groceries and toiletries. We also have five workers at the charity shop that we would love to bless with groceries.”
Only physical delivery of donations of food and toiletries is being accepted for this cause, and can be delivered at Animal Welfare Helderberg on 14 Mansfield Crescent, Gordon’s Bay by 10 December. Takealot and Checkers 60/60 deliveries are also welcome.
