The rains down in Africa are doing some fantastic things for the dam levels in the Western Cape; social media has been flooded with Berg River joy.
Cape Town, South Africa – Our hearts are singing! The Western Cape has had a glorious rainy season so far, much of which has made up for the disastrous drought they have experienced over the last three years.
It has come with such relief that people are sharing multiple videos of the Berg River overflowing.
Earlier this month we shared the good news that the dam levels in Cape Town had surged by 7% in just one week. Having endured multiple cold fronts since the start of winter, the dam levels have brought a smile to everyone’s faces and made the bitter cold that much more bearable.
On the 22nd of July, the Berg River was at 92.9%, but yesterday it overflowed having reached 100%. With the banks breaking, the reservoir gates were opened allowing the excess water to flow out and nourish waterways down the river.
In other good news, all dam levels are up, and Steenbras Upper is closest to hitting 100% full. Overall, the dams are up by 3% since last week.

While dam levels may be up, we encourage residents of the Western Cape to continue using water wisely. Also, the storms have been very intense in some parts, drive safely and secure any objects that could possibly be picked up by strong winds. Lastly, make sure your pets are safely kept indoors.
