Cleaning Up After The Grown-Ups: Camps Bay High School cleans up and tracks rubbish.
Cape Town, South Africa (2 June 2021) – With bin bags, gloves (yes masks too) and boundless enthusiasm, it’s the students of the Camps Bay High School who are leading the charge against rubbish.
The school’s Environmental Club hosts regular cleanups in the Camps Bay area.
The club has approximately 25 core members and an additional 100 or so learners regularly join the team to help with beach clean-ups.
The club tackles environmental issues around the school and community including recycling initiatives, beach clean-ups and research in partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium.
“The Environmental Club Committee members this year is incredibly focused on increasing awareness about environmental issues in our community and obviously, as we are right on the ocean front, plastic pollution is a big focus of the team,” says Kathleen Drew, the teacher-in-charge of the club.
“They have taken the initiative to run regular beach clean-ups and help with scientific research by using the App to track marine debris. I am very proud of them!”
They also get involved with #FridaysForFuture events and lectures and lessons on environmental issues.
They aim to create a more environmentally aware community and work towards a sustainable future for our planet.
Last week, the club, cleaned up in the Maiden’s Cove area and made use of the Marine Debris Tracker App to report the litter that they found.
The app allows one to help make a difference by checking in when you find trash along coastlines and waterways.
