The Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s kennel building project is officially set to be back up and running thanks to pawpular demand following a three-year hiatus!
Cape Town, South Africa (02 July 2024) — After three years on pause, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s kennel building project and event for Mandela Day is finally set to be back up and running thanks to pawpular demand from the public.
The Khayelitsha Clinic will host its 7th kennel building event on 18 July for corporates looking to keep a township pet warm and on Saturday the 20th for the public to get involved. Both will run from 9 am to 2 pm at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic at 21297 Govan Mbeki Road, Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.
“Winter can be very cold in Cape Town with icy temperatures, heavy rains and gale for winds,”” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising, Communications and Programmes Executive.
“In the Khayelitsha township only a small percentage of pets have shelter or are allowed to sleep indoors. Many pets sleep outside without blankets or kennels…People from the public often want to assist but don’t know how. These events allow people to come together for a fun-filled event to building a warm kennel for a cold township dog in need.”
Marcelle adds that the well-loved event has in previous years, seen some teams build their kennels in 67 minutes flat. But regardless of how long it takes, what matters far more is the effort itself. And even if you can’t finish the kennel, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic will happily finish the task at hand for you.
Wood and instruction manuals on how to build a kennel will be provided, but here’s what you can bring to the occasion:
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Hammer
- Paint brush
- Any extra nails, varnish, paint, hands saws or anything else to beautify the kennel (these are not essential but would be welcomed)
The last kennel building event took place all the way back in 2019 where 35 kennels were built thanks to donated, dismantled wooden pallets before being handed out to community pets in need of shelter. But hopes are high that those numbers can be topped!
More Details:
- The cost to participate is donation-based
- Space is limited to 100 people per event
- Bookings are essential and can be made here.
“We hope to raise R67 000 for Mandela Day and, even if you can’t join us at the event, any donations would be greatly appreciated,” Marcelle adds.
“All funds will go directly to caring for the sick, injured and homeless pets in Khayelitsha and close surrounding communities. We are the only access to medical care and shelter in the community.”
