Re.Bag.Re.Use is collecting old cassette tapes as part of an artistic project which will be featured in an exhibition at the end of April.

Hout Bay, South Africa (20 March 2024) – Re.Bag.Re.Use is helping artists Viveka and Rucita Vassen of Ananta Design Studio with their art pieces for the Upcycle exhibition at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. They are busy collecting old cassette tapes for their part in the exhibition.

One of the elements that will be forming part of Ananta’s design is a forest of kelp fronds, which Re.Bag.Re.Use will be crocheting using audio cassette tapes. Each frond will be stuffed with clean soft plastic waste. Instead of the cassette tapes or plastic landing up in the environment or landfills, it is being repurposed into this spectacular artwork.

Each frond will be decorated with beautifully designed upcycling, bead and felt work, and represent different elements of reconnecting with nature and finding inner balance.

If you have any cassette tapes that you would prefer not to land up in a landfill. Please contact Re.Bag.Re.Use regine@rebagreuse.com. Apart from using these audiocassette tapes for beautiful designs such as for the Upcycle exhibition, the team also make beautiful multifunctional products from it (www.rebagreusehub.co.za).

There are currently 15 ladies on the Re.Bag.Re.Use team who have gained meaningful employment through the project. From each Re.Bag.Re.Use sale, a percentage is also donated to the Neighbourhood Old Age Home (NOAH) and the SPCA.

The Exhibition

The exhibition will be open to the public for free at Makers Landing at V&A Waterfront on 19 and 20 April 2024.

On Friday, 19 April, design students will be welcomed for a special student-focused day, and on Saturday, 20 April, there will be a free curated walkabout with the artists and designers at 11h00.

The Upcycle exhibition will feature many artists. Viveka Vassen, co-founder and designer of Ananta Design Studio shares the following about their design,

“The Ananta installation invites you to join us in imagining the future of the workspace as we see it: playful nature immersed spaces. A magical, sensory space that connects us back to nature, ignites creativity and sparks joy and curiosity. Creating an engaging and stimulating environment with the freedom to play, explore and experiment, we open a world of possibilities!”

Rucita Vassen, co-founder and designer adds,

“Our installation is a glimpse of this imaginative magical world with colour, texture and different craft techniques creating a whimsical nature inspired landscape, from the starting point of a mundane office bin. We’ve included soft tactile surfaces appealing to our inner child’s need for a nurturing and comfortable space.”

Come and explore the future of the workspace!
