Two orphaned Chacma Baboons have received many nutritious meals thanks to donations from the public; the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital share the good news.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 April 2021) – On the 15th of April the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet asked the public for help to feed two young Chacma Baboons. The two orphans had been weaned off their special formula and started a diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and superworms.

To make sure these two growing orphans get everything they need, the veterinary hospital staff feed them regularly. To feed them both it costs R38 a meal. This is not a big expense considering the price of one coffee at most restaurants.

For this reason, the veterinary hospital launched their One Meal initiative to help feed all their little patients until they are strong enough for soft release. By breaking down their dietary costs into one meal, people can easily forgo a coffee to provide one meal to an animal in need.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Vet’s feeding programme is called “One Meal“, and it allows the public to support their various rescues by paying for one meal.

After the team made the plea for help feeding these two, they were blown away by how many people paid for their upcoming meals.

“A few days ago, we asked if you would consider donating #OneMeal for the two Chacma baboons in our care. Huge thanks to those who donated – We are so grateful for all the assistance and donations. Without you, we could not make a difference. A massive THANK YOU to those that supported our #OneMeal initiative so far.”

“This video shows the older of the two baboons, enjoying some enrichment with one of her meals. We love to combine food items with interesting elements, in this case, a hollow ball, which makes the experience a little more challenging and fun than the usual food bowl!”

You can make a donation via direct deposit. The vet treats indigenous animals free of charge, relying solely on the donations and support of their community.
