Champion of icy swims and the man who knows the Robben Island to Blouberg Crossing better than anyone, Howard Warrington, is set to take on his 212th mission in an effort to help John Moore Animal Welfare secure a bakkie!

Cape Town, South Africa (19 February 2025) — When it comes to the Robben Island to Blouberg Crossing, few know the cold and unforgiving route quite as well as Howard Warrington. A champion of icy swims and Guinness World Record holder, Howard is preparing for the plunge once again, for the 212th time!

As has often been the case for Howard, the latest of his swims is dedicated to charity.

The John Moore Animal Welfare Foundation based in Robertson are in dire need of a bakkie to reach more animals. In an effort to help the team secure the funds for this, Howard is turning to the water few dare dip their toes in.

An avid animal lover, Howard has rallied funds for other animal welfare-focused organisations like the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to great success in the past.

Along with his darling wife, Elmarie who will skipper the boat, and beloved Border Collie Lily Warrington, Howard will take on his latest swim between 28 Feb or mid-March when the weather gives him a gap.

The stretch is 7kms, with waters dipping to temperatures of 13 degrees. What makes Howard the Champion of icy swims? Well, besides completing the channel over 200 times, Howard also tackles it in nothing more than a humble speedo.

John Moore Animal Welfare couldn’t be more thrilled to have Howard’a help on hand.

The bakkie will help them assist animals whose owners cannot walk to the nearest vet with their pets, allowing more animals to get much-needed veterinary care.

“There is so much work to be done in our surrounding community and not having a full-time, suitable vehicle is preventing us from reaching more animals desperately in need of care,” shares spokesperson Michelle Uren.

“Every cent raised will bring us one step closer to our goal of the R50,000 still needed to purchase a bakkie.”
