Wild Shots Educational Outreach is broadening the horizons of disadvantaged children, teaching them photography skills and creating opportunity to grow.
Mike Kendrick created a programme that would teach children to understand South African wildlife and to help fight for their survival. He did this by taking children from disadvantaged backgrounds and teaching them to be wildlife photographers.
He believes that you cannot ask someone to save something if they have never seen it in real life. So he took the children in surrounding areas on game drives.
Mike started the programme, Wild Shots Educational Outreach, in 2015. Each child has access to their own DSLR camera for the day. He also ensures that each school that he works with has a camera available for the children that wish to further their skills through practice.
“One day I would love to see one of our graduates picking up an award… something like The Wildlife Photographer of the Year,” – Mike Kendrick
The Wild Shots Educational Outreach doesn’t only focus on wildlife photography, they also work on various works such as portraiture and other camera skill sets.
The photography skills are a completely new set of skills for these kids to have access to. It gives them more career options especially because there are camera’s at their schools.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with some inspiring teachers through Wild Shots Outreach.” – Mike Kendrick
Using photography to educate children about animal conservation is a brilliant idea! We look forward to what the future holds!
