The team from Critter Rescue SA is encouraging South Africans to stick to chocolate bunnies for Easter this year, sharing that real bunnies are lots of work.
South Africa (03 April 2023) – Who doesn’t love the sight of a cute fluffy bunny? South Africans have a habit of using Easter to gift bunnies but often don’t realise the work and effort it takes to keep them as pets. Critter Rescue SA is encouraging people to stick to chocolate this year.
Critter Rescue SA (CRSA) was founded in 2018 to help take care of little critters that are abandoned or abused. Currently, the organisation is caring for rats, bunnies, hedgehogs, tenrecs, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, reptiles and degus. 98% of these animals have been surrendered by families that do not want them anymore. That is a terribly sad statistic!
The organisation started when Karien van Wyk did a home check for Lauren Namer, who founded the Little Critter Rescue Club. Lauren needed to close the organisation, so Karien offered to take it over. CRSA was officially registered as a non-profit organisation in September 2018 and received its NPO status in October 2018.
The team rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes various critters and sometimes even cats, dogs or birds. Some of the residents have taken up long-term space with Karien due to old age or specific health issues.
They want to impress on the public, that owning a bunny is not so simple and there are many requirements to be sure you are giving it a good life. Families should do research and be committed to up to 15 years with the animal.
They welcome adoptions through the organisation, which also applies the “adopt don’t shop” mentality. So you can rescue a bunny versus buying one from the pet trade. To adopt please email them at adoptions@critterrescue.org.za.
If you still want to gift a bunny but don’t want a chocolate one and are not sure how the care of it will happen, you can also make a donation, in your loved one’s name, to the Critter Rescue SA team. Doing this will help them feed the 200 bunnies currently in their care and/or cover the cost of sterilisation, which also helps prevent unwanted litters.
You can donate directly using the details below or find out more about the organisation via Facebook, Instagram or the Website.

Last year, Dr Cliff Bull from the Craig View Veterinary Clinic shared a valuable Facebook post to discuss what it means when bringing a bunny into the home. If you do decide a bunny is the perfect gift this year, give it a read so you at least know what to prepare for.
