The Coastal Ghost, aka Stefan Graunke, fashioned a collection net out of a pool float and went into the ocean to collect plastic. His video is distressing but a reminder that we should all do a little more!
Durban, South Africa (02 March 2020) – Starting in January 2019, the Coastal Ghost, aka Stefan Graunke, set off to clean as many beaches as possible across South Africa.
Stefan Graunke launched the Coastal Ghost Coastline Cleanup Project Starting in Richards Bay on the 21 of February 2019, the project ran until ending in Port Nolloth on the West Coast. However, it didn’t really stop there. Since completing his massive beach clean. Stefan has travelled a few places inland to do river cleans.
While in Durban recently for an educational clean-up with the Atholton Primary School, Stefan went out into the ocean to take a look at just how bad the plastic problem was.
He created a video for TikTok, a new video sharing platform, but shared it on his Facebook too where many were shocked at how much plastic was seen under the water.
Using a special floatation device, Stefan was able to collect some plastic while surveying the problem. Sadly the ocean was a bit rough and he was unable to collect as much plastic as he would have liked.
You can find out when the next Coastal Ghost clean-up will be by following the Facebook page for updates, here.
Our oceans deserve more than this! It is distressing to see that much plastic in our oceans. We can all do more by picking up litter as we go and making sure to recycle as much as possible.
