The community of Fairland came together to save Sushi, the dog who fell through an open manhole and got stuck in a drain.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 July 2021) – Sushi the Dog had a terrible fall through an open maintenance hole and got stuck in a drain pipe.

An urgent call for help was put out on the I love Northcliff, and I love Fairland Facebook group. Quickly emergency personal and people started coming together. Jean Berdou from Future City Fourways was part of the Fourways Joint Operations Centre to obtain necessary resources.

Before long, several emergency services, individuals and other helpers were coordinated, and a plan of action was put in place.

They worked non-stop to get Sushi out. Even the K9 Search and Rescue team joined in the efforts.

“It was extremely heartwarming to see our community and multiple responders jump into action to help Sushi at the time she needed this the most. The resources, responders and effort to help her was simply not spared and is a clear reflection of the character of our community in action. Well done to each and everyone involved. What you did was incredible, special and brings joy to the hearts of many who so need encouraging news at this time.” – Jean Berdou

Sushi was rescued after 9 hours of being stuck. The entire community followed the story, waiting for the happy update that the senior dog was finally safe and back aboveground.
