By sharing and inspiring collective action, the OILWATCH conference laid the groundwork for a greener, more sustainable future.

 

Durban, South Africa (20 August 2024) – OILWATCH International’s recent conference in eThekwini brought together a powerful partnership of environmental activists and community leaders to address pressing climate and social justice issues.

The event brought together a diverse group of voices and organisations, including Groundwork, SDCEA, HOMEF, Green Connection, and communities from around the globe, to advance their shared mission for environmental justice.

By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing, the event conference a renewed commitment to creating a sustainable and equitable future for all.

Notably, the strong collaborative efforts of partners like Groundwork and SDCEA are crafting innovative strategies to address climate change, promote sustainable development, and ensure equitable access to resources.

According to SDCEA, attendees celebrated the strength and resilience of local communities who are at the forefront of the fight for environmental and social justice.

Speakers such as Bobby Peek and Desmond D’Sa shared invaluable insights on grassroots activism and policy advocacy.

Local environmentalists Makoma Lekalakala and Sherelee Odayar provided powerful perspectives on sustainable practices and community engagement.

There were also two interactive panels which allowed communities to engage in pressing matters they are dealing with in their respective communities and gain knowledge from the various panel members which included representatives from the organisations who hosted the event.

With the common goal of paving the way for meaningful change and a sustainable future, environmentalists, participants and community members left the conference with a renewed commitment to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

The strategies and action plans developed during the conference aim to tackle environmental challenges head-on and drive ongoing efforts for a greener, more just world.
