The Two Oceans Aquarium recently shared an awesome post about their hidden rooftop oasis. They converted it into a sustainable rooftop garden.
The Two Oceans Aquarium have converted their rooftop into a sustainable veggie garden to feed the Aquarium’s sea turtles. The project was started by turtle conservationist Talitha Nobleas as a place to grow veggies to feed their rehab green sea turtles, Bob and Sandy.
Since then the project has grown into even more. The garden now includes waterwise indigenous plants and herbs to share with the staff. It was expanded by the workshop assistant Themba Ngece who is also a trained horticulturalist.
The entire staff base have all stepped up in helping grow the garden. Many have brought their odd house plants and garden clippings to make the garden fuller. Some have even given personal time to make the garden pretty with murals and artworks.
“Recycled artwork and repurposed building material, scraps of wood and other odds and ends have been brought together to create an oasis where staff now want to spend their breaks.”
The aircon system provides condensation, it is collected and used to water the garden. Any lunch leftovers are given to the worms in the worm farm to thrive on.
“It’s something special to have had so many staff come together to create this wonderful garden from nothing. From our hands-on curatorial staff to the office workers of the marketing department, everyone feels a bit of ownership of our little oasis in the middle of the V&A Waterfront.”
