Two firefighters from the Bredasdorp Fire Station are both recovering well after their fire truck left the road and rolled down an embankment while they were responding to the fierce Bredasdorp veldfire earlier this week.

Bredasdorp, Western Cape (13 November 2025) – The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon, during one of the toughest stretches of the fire.

“One of our large fire trucks from the Bredasdorp Fire Station was involved in an incident earlier this afternoon, rolling down an embankment while responding to the ongoing veldfire. Two firefighters were injured and have been transported to the local hospital for medical care. We ask that the community keep them in their thoughts as they recover,” shared the Overberg District Municipality.

Both firefighters were attended to and thankfully, are now on the mend.

“We are pleased to report that the two Overberg District firefighters involved in yesterday’s fire truck incident are both recovering well. Firefighter Conradie sustained a foot injury and will be discharged tomorrow to continue recovery before rejoining his team. Firefighter Nyentell was not admitted and received a follow-up check-up this morning,” the municipality shared.

Firefighters often spend days on the line with little rest, battling harsh winds, steep terrain and fast-moving flames. The job demands long hours, quick decisions and the kind of courage that people tell stories about.

This week, the risk became very real for the crew in Bredasdorp.

As for the fire itself, there has been progress, but the job is far from over. The North side of the mountain, between Napier and Bredasdorp, was contained two days ago. But crews are still hard at work on the South side near Boskloof Road, where the fire was still reported to be blazing on Thursday morning.

Firefighters, landowners and volunteers are still out there, pushing through day six of exhausting conditions.

There’s good news about the damaged fire truck. It was successfully recovered, and it’ll now undergo repairs so it can return to service as quickly as possible.

“We thank residents for their ongoing patience, kindness, and encouragement to our crews. Please remain vigilant, avoid affected areas, and allow emergency services to continue their work safely and efficiently,” shares the municipality.
