Schools in the Western Cape and Gauteng have been financially rewarded for their 2016 glass recycling stats as part of the annual school competition.
The Glass Recycling Co. host an annual competition for schools, the concept is for schools to collect glass in their glass banks, usually located somewhere on the schools premises and then the amounts collected get tallied and a winning school is chosen by the amount they have collected.
The competition decides on a winner once a year where there is a grand prize but the company also rewards prizes throughout the year to schools that are collecting glass.
The competition was held in Gauteng, the Cape Peninsula and the greater Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas. Schools in these areas were invited to apply for the placement of glass banks. Apart from placing glass banks at the schools, The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) also supplied curriculum compliant material to enable teachers to facilitate a holistic view of the glass recycling process.
“The objective of the competition is to educate learners about the many benefits of glass recycling and the ease with which it can be done,” said Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of TGRC.
The competition has 3 winners in each region and a final overall national winner. The competition is open to schools in the above mentioned regions as well as the newly included area’s Port Elizabeth and East London.
In 2016 the top 3 schools in Gauteng collected 115 256 kilograms of glass and the top 3 schools of in the Western Cape collected 109 011 kilograms. That doesn’t include all the other schools that took part around the country.
“This is one competition not to miss out on – and the next round of the competition for 2017, has just kicked off, but you can still enter, which will see us set for even bigger and better things, with the added benefit of educating learners and helping to protect our environment at the same time.”
