An Australian family experienced a stroke of “luck” when they found a gold nugget — valued at over R360 000 — while they were walking their dog on Sunday.
Central Victoria, Australia – The family from Bendigo in Victoria, who asked to remain anonymous, were walking their dog — fittingly named Lucky — on the outskirts of town on Sunday morning when the daughter kicked something hard lying on the ground.
“I actually walked right past it, but my daughter pretty much kicked it as she was walking. She then goes ‘Dad, is this gold?’ I said, ‘I think it might be’,” the father told the Bendigo Advertiser.
The father said they weighed the nugget at a nearby supermarket, as they couldn’t find anywhere to weight it properly. The gold nugget weighed 624 grams — a value the family claims could be worth over Aus $37 000 (or over R360 000).
The father said experts have assessed the nugget and confirmed that it is in fact gold. He also explained that the change of luck had come at a crucial time.
“To sell it as a nugget whole, it’s probably worth a little bit more than that. We’ve come on some tough times, so it’s really good because we’ve been struggling financially. It couldn’t be better timing really.”
And while the family plan on returning to the site to look for more gold, the rest of us (even in South Africa) are rushing out to change our dog’s names to Lucky and take them for all the walks.
