Meet the latest project to come out of the IKEA Lab — it’s called The Growroom, and it’s described as “a spherical garden that empowers people to grow their own food much more locally in a beautiful and sustainable way.”
This easily-constructed new IKEA product could feed dozens of people in your very own neighborhood – and the blueprints are available for download free of charge.
Designers Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husumto hope that the Grow Room will encourage people to engage in growing their own food in sustainable, natural ways. Not to mention that the Grow Room brings the food of a farm to a city by taking up only a small fraction of the space.
If you want to create the DIY garden, all you really need to make a Grow Room is some plywood, screws, a hammer and some seeds!
According to Space 10, such technologies as 3D printing and cutting are as accessible as printers.
“This means most people — in theory — could produce almost anything themselves,” Space 10 said in a press release. “Just as printers are now ubiquitous; local and on-demand, customized production could become the norm of the future. We’re tapping into this emerging potential by releasing the cutting files for The Growroom.”
