The Springs SPCA has big plans this festive season; they’re preparing to build the biggest ‘Pet Food Christmas Tree’ in SA and you can help them!

Springs, South Africa (27 November 2024) — We all have personal preferences when it comes to Christmas trees. Some like a traditional look with all the bells and bows. Others, prefer a little minimalist modernity. But if you had to ask a team of animal lovers in Springs what their ideal Christmas tree should look like, the answer would have nothing to do with tinsel or branch arrangements. The Springs SPCA have their own idea for a Christmas tree like no other, and have already got cracking in preparing the biggest ‘Pet Food Christmas Tree’ anyone’s (likely) ever seen!

The Springs SPCA have invited all their supporters to help them make history with a massive tree made only of pet food.

They’ve set a target of 10,000kgs of food, and as of this week they’re already off to a good start with 2,500kgs.

For the team, the Pet Food Christmas Tree takes a pratical spin on a festive tradition. It’s goal is “to ensure the animals at the Springs SPCA are well taken care of, especially as the silly season approaches and where our pound takes on even more strain,” share the team.

On the Wishlist

  • 250 x 40kgs packets of pet food
  • 400 x 25 kgs packets of pet food
  • 1250 x 8kgs packets of pet food

This mission is going to require a lot of support from local Santa Paws!Anyone who can contribute can do so by:

  • Dropping off a donation at the Springs SPCA (Corner of Ermelo Road and Townsend Road, Strubenvale)
  • Or at Fierce Functional Fitness (6 Phoenix Road North, Selcourt)
  • Or via payfast

Meanwhile, in news of other animal lovers who are making festive preparations for pets in need, Claudine Matthews, who spearheads PawsRehoming in Boksburg, is looking for Santa’s helpers of her own!

The Xmas Box Lunch Project is on and hopes to feed many impoverished animals in need from 15 December.

Requirements for the box lunches are:

Inside a 2-litre ice cream tub:

  • A portion of quality dog pellets (these need to be protected in a sandwich bag or something similar to keep ants/moisture/anything unsavoury at bay
  • 2 Sachets of ready-made gravy (these need to remain in the sachets)
  • Dog-friendly biscuits
  • A chew hoof
