A group of enthusiastic high school learners didn’t just learn about marine science; they lived it – interacting with marine scientists and dedicated aquarists, and life-saving veterinarians over three days at the SAAMBR headquarters.

Durban, South Africa (16 October 2025) – Durban high schoolers recently got to dive into the world of marine science with the fantastic SAAMBR team over three days as part of its final marine careers course for the year – and it was a splash!

The learners got to interact with and learn from SAAMBR’s marine scientists, aquarists, divers, veterinarians, animal care specialists and technical experts.

From epic snorkelling sessions and seal enrichment to observing dolphin training sessions and being treated to a back-of-house tour – the group of curious learners got to enjoy and delve into it all, gaining new insight into the world under the sea.

“They learnt practical skills in the form of dissections, a bioblitz, conservation content creation, microscope work, and fish population estimation,” SAAMBR said.

SAAMBR is dedicated to disseminating information and inspiring care for the oceans through uShaka Sea World. At the heart of the three-day marine course is the vision to inspire high schoolers and nurture the ocean advocates of tomorrow who will hopefully be inspired to explore careers that will drive change, conduct critical scientific research and ensure the long-term health and resilience of marine ecosystems for all life on Earth.

The enthusiastic group of learners also rolled up their sleeves for a nurdle clean-up, where they collected over 3,000 nurdles in under 30 minutes!

“We look forward to seeing these future marine biologists, veterinarians, aquarists, divers and ocean advocates make waves in the world of conservation,” SAAMBR delightfully concluded.
