South Africans are no strangers to wild encounters, but even we had to do a double take when ostriches were spotted casually strutting along a Western Cape beach like it was their private coastal retreat.
Western Cape, South Africa (16 February 2021) – Only in South Africa: Ostriches have been spotted living their best beach life!
Yup, you read that right. Ostriches. On the beach. In the Western Cape. Just casually taking a seaside stroll like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
Because, why not?
South Africa never fails to keep us entertained, and just when we thought we’d seen it all – from hippos in Joburg suburbs to penguins crossing roads in Simon’s Town – along came the latest “only-in-Mzansi” moment: ostriches dipping their toes in the ocean at Cape Point.
The surreal sighting was captured by local TikTokker Kayleigh Tuck, who shared the moment on social media. Set to the iconic tune of Toto’s Africa (because obviously), the video shows a group of ostriches strutting their stuff along the shoreline like they own the place. And to be fair… they kind of do.
Whether they were celebrating the end of the beach lockdowns, paying a visit to their coastal cousins (hey, penguins!), or simply needed a break from the Karoo heat – we’ll never know. But what we do know is that the internet is absolutely loving it. And honestly, so are we.
There’s something beautifully bizarre about watching a creature that’s so quintessentially “veld” suddenly appear against the backdrop of crashing waves and sea foam. It’s peaceful. It’s hilarious. And it’s very, very South African.
This isn’t the first time wildlife has surprised us by popping up in places we least expect – and that’s the charm of living here. Nature is never too far away. It reminds us to slow down, have a laugh, and look up from our phones… unless, of course, you’re filming a TikTok of an ostrich beach party.
So go on, take 30 seconds out of your day to watch these feathered giants go full coastal – it’s the kind of content we didn’t know we needed until it landed on our screens.
