Ark Animal Centre may have closed down during lockdown, but their passion for pups has inspired them to reopen with a fresh, innovative approach!

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 April 2021) – Although 2020 was an emotionally rough year for Tracy Otto and her daughters with having to close down the Ark Animal Centre – a puppy adoption shelter in Fourways, there is a beautiful bright light at the end of a very long tunnel.

One year on, and they have evolved into a picturesque dog walk park complete with two fully enclosed private areas for unsocialised dogs, a 2,5km myrun trail running track, a nostalgic cafe, aptly named the Heart of Suburbia, that offers a canine menu for their furry guests as well as enclosed kids play area with a bike track, fairy garden, tiny town, Wendy house, fire station and more… but that is all secondary to the very exciting news of them launching a Woodrock Animal Rescue Pop-Up adoption Centre and Woodrock Charity Store.

For many years Ark Animal Centre and Woodrock Animal Rescue worked with the same level of passion, ethics and purpose to improve and re-home the abused and abandoned animals in Gauteng. When Ark had to close its doors, it was a natural and obvious move for Woodrock to step in to take on all the puppies and dogs that would be in need.

In typical Woodrock style, Nick and Stella Meldau – the founders of Woodrock, are pioneering yet another brilliant idea to promote adoption by launching their Pop-Up Adoption Centre. Their aim and goal is to increase dog and cat adoption by making it easily accessible to people in an outdoor, calming, family and dog-friendly environment.

The Woodrock team are hoping other shelters will follow suit. COVID has put many industries under huge strain, and the animal welfare world is definitely one of the most affected. It has, however, forced people to get creative, think and innovate differently, and because of Ark and Woodrock’s ability to evolve and adjust to their situations, there is now even more opportunities for people to save a life through adoption.

Ark Walk Park is open every day from sunrise to sunset, with an entry fee of R20 for adults and R10 for kids/pensioners. The Heart of Suburbia Cafe is open on weekends from 8 am – 4 pm.

The Woodrock Adoption Pop Up and Charity Shop will be open on weekends from 10 am – 2 pm. For updates, please follow them on Facebook or Instagram.

For more information on adoption or to volunteer, please contact Woodrock on 076 155 4439, hello@woodrockanimalrescue.co.za or visit their website.
