The municipality has confirmed that the Knysna Fires are finally under control but they are still keeping an eye on all flare-ups.
After 2 long days of devastation the Knysna Municipality has confirmed the wildfire has been contained. Water-bombing and ground operations will continue this morning and additional firefighters have been deployed to the Plettenberg Bay area where a fire is spreading.
About 80% of the fireline of the wildfires that have spread throughout the Garden Route have been contained and some areas declared safe. Officials and residents are focusing on operations and helping affected people.
The Western Cape Government has announced that it will be redirecting funds, under Section 25 of the Provincial Finance Management Act, to provide support for those affected by devastating fires in Knysna.
Western Cape Finance MEC, Ian Meyer spoke to CapeTalk’s Kieno Kammies about the funds and how they will be allocated.
“This is definitely a crisis. I have now personally met with my staff from the provincial budget office and I have also asked them to do a baseline assessment over the coming weekend because we haven’t seen the full scale of this devastation and the extent of the fires.”
“Over the weekend they will do some basic assessments which will also allow me to proceed to the cabinet, For example to me it is very concerning that the Western Cape has also lost some schools, hospitals and some road infrastructure.” – Ian Meyer, Western Cape Finance MEC
The area may be declared as a disaster area when the Municipal Council are finished deliberating on whether or not to request the declaration from the Government.
