As of today, the cumulative number of COVID-19 active cases identified in South Africa is 158,998, with 15,900 new cases reported over the past 24 hours.
South Africa (28 June 2021) – In the last 24 hours, South Africa has seen an increase of 15,900 new COVID-19 infections, which brings our active cases to 158,998 and our recoveries to 1,709,999. We currently have a 96,5% recovery rate in closed cases and are making our way to even more recoveries every day.
COVID-19 is the greatest global shock in decades. Millions of lives have been lost, and the world’s economy likely faces the worst recession since the 1930s. The resulting loss of employment and income will cause further damage to livelihoods, health, and sustainable development.
The numbers can often seem confusing. As of today, South Africa has conducted 12,968,748 tests and had 1,928,897 total positive results, but positive results change daily as people recover, so even though there have had over 1,6 million positive results, we have also had 1,709,999 recoveries. See confusing.
Here is a different way to report the data while still using the same numbers:

Here are today’s total numbers:
- Recoveries: 1,709,999 (7,929 more than yesterday)
- Active Cases: 158,998 (6,985 more than yesterday)
- Deaths: 59,900 (122 more than yesterday)
- Vaccinations: 2,684,999 (2,289 more than yesterday)
We can also break down the Active Cases further to see where each region stands:
- Gauteng: 84,153
- Western Cape: 16,414
- North West: 13,060
- KwaZulu-Natal: 12,162
- Free State: 11,137
- Northern Cape: 7,464
- Mpumalanga: 5,473
- Limpopo: 5,086
- Eastern Cape: 4,049
Vaccination breakdown:
We use the health department’s report to compile these numbers. The department currently only reports on 2 sets of totals and does not take the J&J one shot into account, or the fact that some people have gone for their second jab. We have contacted them to ask why they have done it this way and are waiting for a response.
- Sisonke Programme Completed Vaccinations: 479,768
- Cumulative number of Vaccinations Administered: 2,205,228
- Total Pfizer First Dose Vaccinations: ?
- Total J&J One-Shot: ?
- Total Pfizer Second Dose Vaccinations: ?
This graph represents the last known numbers as of the 28th of June:

Our hearts go out to everyone who has tragically lost their lives to this virus, and our thanks go out to all the incredible frontline heroes who are helping us get through this pandemic. But, please remember that we still need to be wearing our masks, physical distancing and staying safe.
All the numbers represented in this post are the same numbers shared globally by the Health Minister in the evening media report.
Graphs:
We have developed a series of graphs to try to show the current COVID-19 climate in South Africa.
The first being the “total” cases since the 1st of June 2020, the second being the “active cases” in the same timeframe, and the third is a snapshot since the country started vaccinations.
