A tiny lost mongoose was reminded that help is never far away!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (06 January 2026) – A couple, Danette and Christo, were surprised when they found a baby mongoose alone in their garage, calling out for its troop. Knowing they couldn’t leave the little one without helping, they stepped into action.
“This little baby mongoose found itself alone in a residential garage, calling out for its troop. Danette and Christo found it and kept it safe overnight and contacted Wildlife Rescue when the troop didn’t arrive to fetch the little one.” shares Wildlife Rescue, a non-profit based in Ballitoville that focuses on rescue, stabilisation and release of local wildlife.
The following day, the team examined the baby mongoose for any signs of injury or illness. All they found was a hungry belly!
“WLR checked the baby over and found no injuries, just a very healthy appetite! After feeding and hydrating, we placed the baby into a release box back at the residence, with everyone patiently waiting for the troop to return.”
Then, early on the next day, the troop arrived to retrieve their precious cargo.
“Early the next morning, the air filled with familiar calls… and then Mum arrived. She picked her baby up without hesitation while the rest of the troop gathered around, huddling close to welcome the little one back.”
Seeing them reunite is the most adorable thing. First, the little one looks distressed and alone. Then mommy shows up and immediately scoops her baby up.
“Moments later, they all ran off together, reunited and safe. Thank you to the residents Danette and Christo who cared and waited, called in WLR to assist and filmed his happy reunion. This is why we do what we do.”
We sometimes forget that even in nature, family bonds are strong. Your tribe will always come back for you if you get lost.
Christ and Danette did the right thing by first contacting WLR – it should always be the first thing one does when finding wildlife in distress on private or public property.
