The Helderberg Wildlife Rescue team had a busy and stressful week and despite being broken into and robbed; they saved 19 wild animals, snakes and spiders.
Helderberg, South Africa (28 October 2020) – The Helderberg Wildlife Rescue vehicle was broken into and cleared out on the 19th of October. The robbers got away with rescue gear, first aid supplies as well as R1400 in call out money. The organisation was gutted but they didn’t let it get in the way of rescuing wildlife in need.
Throughout the week, they attended several call-outs where they rescued 19 wild animals, snakes and spiders. The organisation wants to alert the public that the season change means many animals and other undesirable creatures will be seeking out shade, water and food, all of which are usually found near our homes.
“Summer is here in full swing which means snakes and other wildlife will be looking for water, shade and something to eat. If you come across any snakes or other wildlife, please do not try to harm it, but give me a call on 0745600711 at any time of day or night.”
This message doesn’t only apply to residents of Helderberg. If you find a wild animal in your home, call your local wildlife rescue or SPCA to assist in relocating the animal. If you have found a baby bird, read this post in detail before doing anything.
“The week started off with 5 Puffadders, all at different homes, also notice the difference in the colour variations. 2 Cape Cobras, also both with different colours, 2 Rock Pigeons, 2 Mousebirds, 2 Caracals, an injured female Western Cape Baboon Spider, a Cape Brown Bat, 2 Spotted Eagle Owls, injured Hadida that unfortunately had to be put to sleep due to broken neck, and last but not least, a Tom Cruise Mission Impossible wannabe squirrel that managed to get trapped in a chimney and after much coaxing, the stubborn little bugger was free again.”
