A dog saved an injured hiker on a mountain in Croatia by lying on him for 13 hours.
Croatia (09 January 2022) – The story about a dog saving a hikers life is making headlines around the globe… and giving us all the feels!
North – a beautiful Alaskan Malamute – is being called a hero after keeping Grga Brkic warm while stuck in the Croatian mountains for over 13 hours.
Velebit is the largest mountain range in Croatia and stands at nearly 1,800 metres above sea level. The range forms a part of the Dinaric Alps and is located along the Adriatic coast, separating it from Lika in the interior. Velebit begins in the northwest near Senj with the Vratnik mountain pass and ends 145 km to the southeast near the source of the Zrmanja river northwest of Knin.
Brkic and two other hikers were on the mountain range when the young mountaineer fell down a 500-foot slope, leaving him unresponsive. The two other hikers immediately alerted mountain rescue.
First responders credited the 8-month-old pup with having helped keep Brkic safe and warm.
“North curled up on Brkic and warmed him during the high-altitude rescue mission which lasted 13 hours.”
In a statement on Facebook, the Croatian mountain rescue service explained what had happened.
“Friendship and love between man and dog know no boundaries. Together in happy and difficult moments, that’s life.
Grga Brkic and North climbed down the slope together yesterday afternoon but found themselves at danger’s doorstep in a series of unfortunate circumstances.
North made it down without any injuries, but his friend, a young mountaineer, was not so lucky. North curled up with him and warmed him with his body. His loyalty did not waiver, even when rescuers arrived! He guarded his ‘dad’ for 13 hours.
We can all learn about caring for each other from this story.”
