If you’re in denial about winter being well on its way, don’t go to Matroosberg! The first snowfall of the season has struck, which means its only a matter of time until the area becomes a winter wonderland.
Matroosberg, South Africa (05 May 2025) — The air is crisper, the chills are chilling and winter is well on its way across South Africa. But, it’s not all gloom and blankets that we’ve been avoiding unpacking for weeks. In exciting news for those hoping to catch a glimpse of snow, the Western Cape has welcomed its first glimmers of snowfall, with Matroosberg spotting its first sightings of the season!
The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve announced on 2 May that the first snow for 2025 had fallen and that the “snow party” is starting early this year.
What, in South Africa?
Contrary to popular belief, several areas in South Africa welcome snowfall.
Though snow might only be at a dusting phase right now in Matroosberg, the snowfall there, the Cederberg Mountains and Sutherland (to name a few spots) can get thick enough for snow-angels, snowmen and snowball fights. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Drakensberg Mountains, for they too can enjoy a healthy dose of snowfall.
However, like any kind of naturally occurring event, it can be difficult to assume how much snowfall an area will receive. Your best bet when it comes to a South African snowy adventure, is to keep tabs on the social media pages of snowfall spots, in tandem with local weather services.
Meanwhile in other news from Mother Nature that made us smile, the Augrabies Falls National Park has experienced a powerful increase in water volumes recently thanks to all the rainfall in our country; making the spot a water wonder! Find out more, here.
